Can cats eat curry or spicy food?
Moderate
Not for cats: almost every curry or sabzi gravy is built on onion and garlic, which damage red blood cells days later, plus salt and oil. Chilli mainly irritates the mouth. Don't feed leftovers — give plain cooked meat or fish instead.
Why moderate: The onion–garlic base is the danger; chilli itself mostly irritates.

- Curry, masala and chillialso Gravy, Sabzi, Mirch, Leftovers
- Hindi

What's in it
Onion and garlic (red-cell damage), salt and fat; capsaicin from chilli irritates.
Where it hides
- Leftover dal, sabzi, curry and biryani
- Ready gravy masalas
- Bones from curry
Symptoms to watch for
- Vomiting, diarrhoea
- Drooling, mouth irritation (chilli)
- Days later: weakness, pale gums (onion and garlic anaemia)
Anaemia from onion and garlic shows 3–5 days later.
What to do
If your cat ate a lot of onion- or garlic-heavy curry, call your vet — the anaemia is delayed.
- Don't make your cat vomit at home unless a vet tells you to.
- Switch to plain, unseasoned food.
Where Indian cats meet it
Leftover curry is the commonest 'people food' given to Indian cats and strays.
Myth or fact
Myth“Leftover dal-chawal or curry is a fine diet for a cat”
FactCats are obligate carnivores that need nutrients found only in animal foods, and curry adds onion, garlic, salt and fat. Make complete cat food the base, with plain cooked chicken, fish or egg as extras.
Cat-safe swap: Plain cooked chicken or fish, without bones or masala.
