Can cats drink milk (दूध)?
Mild
Not a poison, but not good for them: most adult cats are lactose intolerant to some degree, so milk usually brings diarrhoea within 8–12 hours. Give fresh water instead; orphan kittens need a kitten milk replacer from the vet, not cow or buffalo milk.
Why mild: Not a poison — but most cats can't digest lactose and get diarrhoea.
- Name
- Milk, paneer and curdalso Doodh, Paneer, Dahi, Cow milk, Buffalo milk
- Hindi
- दूध / पनीर / दही · doodh / paneer / dahi
What counts
Milk (lactose) most; paneer and ghee add fat.
What's in it
Lactose — adult cats make little of the enzyme (lactase) that digests it.
Where it hides
- Saucers of milk for street cats
- Paneer, curd, kheer and milk sweets
Symptoms to watch for
- Diarrhoea
- Tummy upset, gas
- Vomiting in some cats
Diarrhoea usually within 8–12 hours (Cornell Feline Health Center's director, quoted in Inverse).
What to do
Usually settles by itself. Stop the milk and offer fresh water.
- Call your vet if the diarrhoea keeps going, there's blood, or it's a kitten (kittens dehydrate fast).
Where Indian cats meet it
'Billi ko doodh pilao' — a saucer of milk is India's classic gift to cats, at home and on the street.
