Is rat poison (चूहे मारने की दवा) toxic to cats?
Deadly
No — rat poison is deadly to cats, and cats most often get it by eating a poisoned rat. Anticoagulant baits cause bleeding days later; Ratol (yellow phosphorus) paste has no antidote. Go to a vet with the pack, even if your cat looks fine.
Why deadly: Deadly whether eaten directly or in a poisoned rat — and the signs can come days late.
- Name
- Rat poisonalso Ratol paste, Rat cake, Poisoned rats
- Hindi
- चूहे मारने की दवा · choohe maarne ki dawa
What counts
Every rodenticide — anticoagulant cakes and pellets, bromethalin, yellow-phosphorus pastes like Ratol — and poisoned rats or mice.
What's in it
Anticoagulants (stop the blood clotting), bromethalin (a nerve poison cats are more sensitive to than dogs) or yellow phosphorus (multi-organ damage).
Where it hides
- Rat cakes, pellets and pastes in kitchens, godowns and basements
- Ratol tubes (yellow phosphorus)
- Dead or dying rats
Symptoms to watch for
- Anticoagulants: bleeding, bruising, weakness, breathing trouble — days later
- Bromethalin: tremors, wobbliness, paralysis
- Yellow phosphorus: vomiting, then liver failure after a quiet spell (human data)
Often delayed: bleeding days later; with yellow phosphorus, people can look well for up to about 72 hours before liver failure (no cat data).
What to do — now
Go to a vet now. Take the pack, and don't wait for signs.
- Don't make your cat vomit at home unless a vet tells you to.
- If your cat may have eaten a poisoned rat, say so.
Where Indian cats meet it
Kitchens, shops, godowns and building basements; Ratol paste is freely sold in India.

Facts last checked
General information for cat parents, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. The facts come from ASPCA, Pet Poison Helpline, International Cat Care, the Merck Veterinary Manual and the other sources listed on every page — and we say so when the evidence comes from dogs or people. If your cat may have eaten something harmful, call your vet.
