Can cats eat raw fish (कच्ची मछली)?
Moderate
Not as a habit: raw fish — carp especially — contains an enzyme (thiaminase) that destroys vitamin B1, and cats fed it regularly develop nerve problems within weeks. Raw fish also carries infections. Cook it, debone it, and keep it a part of the diet.
Why moderate: As a regular diet, raw carp-type fish destroys vitamin B1; raw fish also carries infections.
- Name
- Raw fishalso Kachchi machhli, Fish scraps, Rohu, Catla
- Hindi
- कच्ची मछली · kachchi machhli
What's in it
Thiaminase (destroys vitamin B1); bacteria and parasites in raw fish.
Where it hides
- Fish-cutting scraps given to cats
- Raw rohu and catla (both carps)
Symptoms to watch for
- From a regular raw-fish diet: dilated pupils
- Wobbliness, odd neck bending, circling
- Seizures, collapse
In experiments, cats fed raw carp or herring showed signs after about 23–40 days.
What to do
A one-off taste isn't an emergency — but a cat fed raw fish regularly that now wobbles, circles or has a seizure needs a vet now (vitamin B1 treatment reverses it).
- Cook fish and remove the bones.
- Never make raw fish the whole diet.
Where Indian cats meet it
Fish-cutting scraps, especially in eastern and coastal India. Rohu and catla are carps — how much of the enzyme they carry hasn't been measured.
Cat-safe swap: Cooked, deboned fish as a treat.
