Plant safety for cats
Is areca palm (एरिका पाम) safe for cats?
SafeListed non-toxic to cats by ASPCA
Yes — areca palm is safe for cats: ASPCA lists it non-toxic. Don't confuse it with supari (the betel-nut palm, not assessed) or with sago palm (cycas), which is deadly.
Why safe: Listed non-toxic to cats by ASPCA.
- Name
- Areca palmalso Golden cane palm
- Hindi
- एरिका पाम
- Botanical name
- Dypsis lutescens (syn. Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) · Arecaceae
How to recognise it
- Clumps of yellowish canes
- Soft, arching, feathery fronds on yellow stalks
Look-alikes and name traps
Not supari: सुपारी is Areca catechu, the betel-nut palm — not assessed here. Not cycas: sago palm has stiff, needle-tipped leaflets and is deadly.
What to do
Listed non-toxic — no poisoning is expected.
- Any plant eaten in quantity can still cause a little vomiting or diarrhoea; call your vet if it keeps going.
- Pesticide or fertiliser on nursery plants is a separate risk: rinse new plants and keep fertiliser sticks out of the pot.
Where Indian cats meet it
The most popular 'air-purifier' palm in Indian nurseries — in living rooms, offices and on balconies.
